Abstract

Although academia emphasises class, sex, gender, racism, and other social values, popular culture appears to be divorced from such arguments. Media creates and conveys fixed beliefs and standards about masculinity, femininity, and class hierarchy which are dominant and widespread in a specific culture at the moment. The blatant sexist and classist humour has masqueraded the mainstream entertainment, as displayed by several successful comedy shows. Our goal is to examine the quality of humour and its popularity through the lens of ‘The Kapil Sharma Show’, which airs on Sony TV every weekend at 9:30 p.m. has maintained its success since its first episode, topping the TRP chart, thanks to its devoted fan base. In this paper, we will go deeper into the jokes made in the show and their relationship with the audience's common sense. We will also look for sexism and classism hidden beneath the veneer of humour. Finally, we will contrast popular taste against intellectual discourse.
